1. Folk traditions and "peripheral" knowledge

This field of scientific investigation deals with research and teaching practice in the domains of customs, behaviour, memory, science, beliefs, folk legends and regional knowledge in the Amazon. The research area covers all activities by academics who study traditions and the spread of cultural practices between individuals. In order to achieve the desired objectives it is important to define the terms of "tradition" and "knowledge" broadly, understanding them both as cultural possession and as cultural heritage which can be spontaneously transmitted by a community.

2. The literary production of the border

This research field encompasses studies and publications which focus on poetic and artistic creation in the border region. These creations are determined by the intrinsic links between the city and the countryside, between Amazonia and the various historical themes which define the Guianas and their social context. Artistic creation also includes folk arts, i.e. an esthetic and discursive construction, the presence of which in the border territory makes visible the peculiar characteristics of this space.

3. The individual and spatial practices

This research field includes investigations into the spatial and regional impact on being and on perceiving reality. This impact manifests itself in the actions of people, but also in their representations of reality. We are dealing here with a landscape-culture-border relationship, indigenous culture, art and representations of Amazonian space.

4. Literature, history and memory

This research paradigm includes forms of questioning which deal with literature as a phenomenon of history and as an expression of identity. It also includes the study of literature and its historical, social and cultural nexus: studies of verbal, oral and written phenomena from a perspective of memory and history.
